continued...
... Mrs. Lovett soon recognizes Barker and tells him of the tale of his "late" wife and gives him his razors that she has lovingly taken care of all these years. Barker changes his name to Sweeney Todd and sets up shop above the pie shop vowing to take revenge on the evil Judge Trupin (Alan Rickman) that ruined his life. Sweeney and Lovett soon realize that with Mr. Todd's blood lust and Lovett's lack of fresh supplies to make pies they have plenty of new meat and a great way to dispose of dead bodies. Yummy.
Sweeney is a gory revenge tale. Once you get into the story being told you hardly remember it's a musical. Johnny Depp does however sound like he's giving us his best David Bowie impersonation. When Sweeney starts killing and dumping the bodies into the cellar head first out of his chair contraption there are gasps galore. The film takes a gory turn that was never fully imagined on the Broadway stage. Sweeney really is an A+ experience...I probably would have like Dreamgirls a little more if they're was more gore.
