| Last House on Dead End Street | The New York Ripper | The Toolbox Murders | The Abominable Dr. Phibes |
continued...
... (Amanda Peet) the prostitute and Ginny (Clea Duvall) and Lou (William Lee Scott) the disgruntled newlyweds. They all end up back at the hotel seeing as how the road is flooded in both directions. Just when everyone is about to get situated two more people arrive with a glimmer of hope inside a police vehicle. Officer Rhodes (Ray Liota) and his prisoner in transit Robert Maine (Jake Busey). It seems the hotel is full, this is when things get really wacky.
Meanwhile back at the courthouse the psychiatrist to the prisoner in transit arrives, Dr. Malick (Alfred Molina) is there to battle for the life of his patient who he is positive has such severe multiple personality syndrome that he should be institutionalized for life and not executed.
Back at the Bates Motel our strangers are getting picked off one by one. And with there bodies are left behind room keys with a descending number scheme. All are positive the killer that Officer Rhodes brought with him is loose and killing off everyone trapped here by the storm. But it gets a little more complicated than that. Nowadays it's not really hard to figure out that any character Ray Liota plays is bound to be the bad guy so there's no surprise here. But wait...there's more. The real bad guy is a character we haven't even met yet. Have you guess the twist yet? It's Dr. Malick's real patient who has just arrived at the courthouse...Malcolm River (Pruitt Taylor Vince). Say what? All of the characters at the hotel are in Malcolm's mind and Dr. Malick is trying to help him reduce the number of voices to one, in order to prove that Malcolm is indeed certifiable.
There's a bit more of a twist to the ending, but I'm not giving it up. My mind has been officially changed. I would absolutely recommend this film to someone who'd like a little thrill ride with a Hollywood twist at the end. Identity is fun and odd, and there are tons of stars that get murdered in fun ways, why not.
