Blood Car is the first full-length directing effort of Alex Orr, and the first horror release for indie studio Fake Wood Wallpaper Films. It shows. The low budget, 80's old school sensibilities and unconventional concept carry the film farther than it deserves, which might leave some viewers confused. What seems high concept at first is really just a tried and true B-movie, and those looking for a B-movie will enjoy what they find; those lured by the implied satire of cars than run on blood because gasoline is $36 a gallon might be left wanting.
Archie Andrews (Mike Brune) is a sensitive vegan kindergarten teacher who spends all of his free time in his homemade lab trying to build an engine that will run on wheatgrass. Despite his unusual dedication, he makes little progress until (ala Little Shop of Horrors) his own blood is mixed with the wheatgrass after he slices his hand on a broken Vodka bottle. Suddenly, the thing works.
Working under the impression that the combination of blood in the wheatgrass is the breakthrough, he suddenly needs a lot of both. This is where things get a little goofy, and a little emo. Self-cutting supplies enough blood to start, and a beautiful but shy vegetable stand owner, Lorraine (Anna Chlumsky) has all the cheap wheatgrass he needs. Eventually he finds that the wheatgrass isn't necessary at all and unable to sacrifice any more of his own blood, the vegan turns to killing small animals in order to continue his work.
