Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) is a celebrated homicide detective until he is confined to a bed after a tragic accident at a crime scene. The incident has left him a quadriplegic that can only operate his computer through a blow straw. His live in nurse Thelma (Queen Latifa) deals with his constant yearning to continue his forensic career, but as his caretaker she knows that these yearnings will always be just that.
On the other side of the city a beat cop, Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie), is about to finish a hot dog when a she and her partner receive a nearby call in a train tunnel. Officer Donaghy takes the call and finds a young boy who has discovered a human hand sticking out of some rubble near a train track. Amelia's instincts tell her the crime scene is staged and with further investigation finds the hand was pointing to a pile of clues in the middle of the track. Without missing a beat Amelia signals an oncoming train to stop before the crime scene is obliterated. This move is not much liked by Captain Howard Cheney (Micheal Rooker) and Officer Donaghy is booted off the site immediately.
