Whenever a film like Dead and Breakfast comes along, I immediately take a look at my Peter Jackson collection of Bad Taste, Dead Alive, and The Frighteners, and think to myself, what if there was no Peter Jackson? He's definitely a guy that has undisputedly lead one of the most influential careers in all horror filmmaking, and whether or not he is done making films for the gorehounds of the world, has yet to be seen. In the meantime, we have films like Dead and Breakfast to gape over. It's not genius, but it's impossible not to give it at least of couple laughs as the film finally gets its ball rolling far enough for the audience to see what writer/director Matthew Leutwyler has set out to accomplish. The evidence of his influences are abundant throughout, but in the end, Dead and Breakfast marks one of the funniest and original zombie (if you can call them that) comedies I've ever seen.
Six friends are in an RV and headed to another friend's wedding, and as you may have guessed, they get a bit lost along the long country roads. During the night, they stay at a bed and breakfast right outside a quiet town by the name of Lovelock. It's there that a nice little road trip turns into a complete nightmare when, all in the same night, The head of the establishment has a heart attack, the cook winds up dead, and one of the traveling friends accidently opens a mysterious box that contains the Kuman Thong, an evil spirit that possesses people and turns them into walking zombies! It's up to the remaining friends, and a few resourceful town residents, to contain the walking dead and fend for their own lives as well.
For this viewer, Dead and Breakfast works as a campy comedy, but it admittedly does carry on the type of comedy that is not always condoned by others. While ...
