From the moment Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is pelted by feminine hygiene products in the girls locker room it's hard to look away. "Carrie" has a great balance of inhumane high school angst that doesn't really prepare you for it's cataclysmic ending. Every time I watch this movie, I cross my fingers and hope that Chris Hargenson (Nancy Allen) and Billy Nolan (John Travolta) aren't gonna pull that rope, drench Carrie in pigs blood and ruin the prom. Ahhh high school.
"Carrie" doesn't start with a whole lot of backstory. It starts in the girls shower and right off the bat director Brian De Palma gives us bush and boob. Then right before we all get too excited Carrie White has her period and starts to bleed in the shower. The girls become like crazed monkeys chanting and throwing tampons at Carrie as she cries. The real tragedy is that Carrie has no idea what a period is and she thinks she is bleeding to death. The girl's gym coach Miss Collins (Betty Buckley) comes to the rescue just in time to witness the pinnacle of Carrie's freak out...and a light bulb explodes. Hmmm, coincidence? Miss Collins takes care of Carrie and sends her home for the day. At home Carrie's mom is waiting for her, Margaret White (Piper Laurie) is a devout religious woman and we soon realize the reason Carrie didn't know what a period was. Margaret blames the coming of the blood on Carrie who has obviously become sexually active in her eyes and drags her into a creepy prayer closet with an even creepier Jesus ...
