The brilliant work of horror art that is the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is very hard to surpass. There's is an amazing realistic edge to Tobe Hooper's direction in that film. When a creative team can tap into something so primal the film has no where to go but up or become a cult classic. Could a remake of this classic really contain the same edge? Short answer? No. But it can be reinvented and show us what the slasher genre has become in the new millennium. What has it come you ask? Well, it may not be as realistic however what they give us in the new "Chainsaw" is unforgiving ultra-violence that makes you cringe in your seat.
The film remains true, for the most part, to the original script. However, with a ridiculous budget comes some ridiculous names. Mostly in the form of Erin played by Jessica Biel whom you would never think you'd see in a horror film. I was never a Jessica fan, but she's pretty rad as Erin. I almost thought I was going to miss the 70's esthetic in this film but there's so much girl and guy-candy in the cast you really don't care.
