Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) is a celebrated homicide detective until he is confined to a bed after a tragic accident at a crime scene. The incident has left him a quadriplegic that can only operate his computer through a blow straw. His live in nurse Thelma (Queen Latifa) deals with his constant yearning to continue his forensic career, but as his caretaker she knows that these yearnings will always be just that.
On the other side of the city a beat cop, Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie), is about to finish a hot dog when a she and her partner receive a nearby call in a train tunnel. Officer Donaghy takes the call and finds a young boy who has discovered a human hand sticking out of some rubble near a train track. Amelia’s instincts tell her the crime scene is staged and with further investigation finds the hand was pointing to a pile of clues in the middle of the track. Without missing a beat Amelia signals an oncoming train to stop before the crime scene is obliterated. This move is not much liked by Captain Howard Cheney (Micheal Rooker) and Officer Donaghy is booted off the site immediately.
With our scene set we find that someone is leaving clues, devious poetic clues…to catch a serial killer. When Lincoln finds out that some rookie has the ability and intuition to feel out a crime scene like he used to he calls in Amelia to personally assist him. An unlikely partnership is struck much to the chagrin of the Captain.
People are kidnapped and left in locations around the city…the clues to all of these sites were left with the pervious kill. Rusty bolts, and bone shards, and antique book pages, oh my! When Amelia and Lincoln are on the verge of finding the killer, they are both taken abruptly off the case. After much blood shed and more mysterious clues the murderer is revealed but not without the loss of many supporting characters.
I quite enjoyed The Bone Collector. This genre of film is usually not my cup of tea; however I enjoy watching Angelina and Denzel together. They have a chemistry that’s more realistic that charming and for the films ultimate plot it works. I will admit the plot gets a bit predictable…but mostly because the storyline seems awfully familiar. HELLO REAR WINDOW! Not that we see anyone killed outside of Lincoln Rhyme’s window, but if you’re a Hitchcock fan at all, you’ll know what I’m talking about. I do recommend this film to anyone that a fan of either of its stars. Both give solid performances.

Neil Marshall steps aside, but not completely off the film set, for this much anticipated sequel. The original Descent was directed by Mr. Marshall, and while he’s producing the sequel, the editor of the first installment has given the film a go as director. Even though this is Jon Harris’s directorial debut, expect much of the same in respects to the brutal carnage, claustrophobic dwellings, and fast paced action.
