Masters of Horror: Season One

Ah the rebirth of the horror television show. Thanks to Showtime, Mick Garris was given the chance to create a weekly horror program with very few limits. Each episode is treated like a separate short film and the end product is pretty friggin’ screamtastic. The first season of the series is composed of 13 movies by some of the best Directors and Writers in the horror genre. Some are funny, some are terrifying, but for the most part they’re all nice and gory. Below is the full list of the episodes, the director and a brief plot summary of each story.

Jennifer / Directed by – Dario Argento

Girl with smokin’ body has very very very deformed face. She like to eat cats and people. Guys fall madly in love with her because she’s very very very easy, but it’s possible that Jennifer isn’t exactly human.

Imprint / Directed byTekashi Miike

A man goes in search of his one true love after leaving her to life in a brothel. When his search comes to a dead end he finds and odd quiet prostitute that know all about his missing love…but she has an evil secret herself. Imprint is very graphic, if you can’t handle scenes of torture this may not be your cup of tea.

Chocolate / Directed by Mick Garris

A former fatty starts to have visions form the point of view of a woman he has never met. He decides to go in search of her and when he finds her a murder unravels. Were they destined to meet? Or was it just a cruel twist of fate?

Sick Girl / Directed by Lucky Mckee

Is almost the cutest lesbian date movie you’ve ever seen. That is until one of them is taken over by a large mutating beetle.

Dance of the Dead / Directed by Tobe Hooper

This is one of my favorites in the first season of the show. Based on a short story by Richard Matheson (I Am Legend), takes place in a post apocalyptic world where teenagers steal blood to earn money. The dregs of humanity hang out in a crazy thrash punk club called the Doom Doom Room where a pasty M.C. (Robert England) dopes up dead bodies that dance on stage with the coxing of cattle prods. The plot goes a bit deeper than that but is most effective because of the awesome sets and ever impending doom surrounding our characters.

Cigarette Burns / Directed by John Carpenter

A film depicting the death of an angel is rumored to still exist in a can somewhere and detective Kirby Sweetman is gonna find it for a collector with a huge open wallet. But what Kirby finds is a film that may devour his soul.

Deer Woman / Directed by John Landis

I felt this episode was more comic relief than an creep story. I hate to ruin it for you, but…the title does what it says and says what it does. She’s a Deer Woman….no, not very scary.

Homecoming / Directed by Joe Dante

Homecoming is the obligatory Night of the Living Dead tale but told with a political twist. Dead American soldiers have been infected by a chemical used on them overseas and now they’re coming back for revenge.

Haekle’s Tale / Directed by John McNaughton

Clive Barker penned this short story that is more graveyard erotica than scary tale. Almost a little too weird to watch without giggling.

Dreams in the Witch House / Directed by Stuart Gordon

Based on an H.P. Lovecraft short story, “Dreams” is about a young college student who slowly become possessed by a resident witch in the attic.

Incident On and Off a Mountain Road / Directed by Don Coscarelli

Is a survival horror tale about learning how to take care of yourself even though you think nothing terrible could happen to you…until, of course, it does. Like when you get into a car accident on an almost abandoned road and your kidnapped by a huge mankiller that’s gonna drill your eyes out before he really hurts you. Shoulda’ paid attention in Self-defence 101.

Fair-Haired Child / Directed by William Malone

The anniversary of a child’s death has driven this couple to kidnap young girls to feed to the monster that will soon become their lost son.

Pick Me Up / Directed by Larry Cohen

Is a hitchhiker tale gone wrong. All deals are off when two battling murderers wanna take turn on unsuspecting travelers.

All of the episodes are currently available on DVD either separately or in a really nifty Mausoleum boxed set, how cute. Each one is worth a watch. It’s surprising how each one feels like a separate entity apart from a series. There’s also a Season Two not currently available in a collected box, but some of the season are available separately. There is no news yet of a 3rd season, but, cross your fingers. This show is a nice surprise.

Our First Look Into The Descent: Part 2

Neil Marshall steps aside, but not completely off the film set, for this much anticipated sequel.  The original Descent was directed by Mr. Marshall, and while he’s producing the sequel, the editor of the first installment has given the film a go as director.  Even though this is Jon Harris’s directorial debut, expect much of the same in respects to the brutal carnage, claustrophobic dwellings, and fast paced action.
Sarah finds herself returning …
