Ahh, the constant team up of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. It does have its charms. I wonder if we’ll ever get tired of those two? For now, I’m still okay with the duo, I dug “Sweeney Todd”, musical or not it was pretty rad. And I’ll say the same for “Sleepy Hollow”. It’s gruesome and romantic. What more could you ask for…especially when you ask you get bleeding trees and a headless Christopher Walken.
People are being decapitated in the quiet hamlet of Sleepy Hollow. The bodies are found headless and oddly enough cauterized at the neck as if chopped off with a red hot blade. The mystery is beyond the local authorities and a specialist, a Scientific Detective named Icabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is sent for to solve the crime. Like any other small town Sleepy Hollow has its family of some note that scandal and rumor seem to follow. Much is the same with Katrina Van Tassel’s (Christina Ricci) family. Icabod quickly falls for Katrina and tries to protect her at every turn until he finds she may be involved in satanic rites.
“Sleepy Hollow” is so much fun to watch. If you’ve ever been a fan of the old story you find yourself constantly surprised by twists and extras added to the tale. The gore is quite fascinating also, but really how can one make a movie solely about decapitation with out a bit of blood…well, “Star Wars”, but that was hardly a horror film. One of the best moments in the film is the discovery of a tree which bleeds when cut. The moment following that discovery is absolutely barf inducing. So, go watch “Sleepy Hollow”…or heads will roll! Har, Har.

Neil Marshall steps aside, but not completely off the film set, for this much anticipated sequel. The original Descent was directed by Mr. Marshall, and while he’s producing the sequel, the editor of the first installment has given the film a go as director. Even though this is Jon Harris’s directorial debut, expect much of the same in respects to the brutal carnage, claustrophobic dwellings, and fast paced action.
